Julia Kurek, une jeune polonaise de 27 ans, toute de rose vêtue, rampe dans la rue principale de la vieille ville de Gdansk, devant un public interloqué : où va-t-elle ? Pourquoi ne marche-t-elle pas ? Les commentaires ne manquent pas sur son état mental : pas normale, malade, folle, camée ! Enfin un passant pose la bonne question : « C’est un happening ? » Oui c’est bien cela, mais quel est son message ? « Message » est d’ailleurs le mot qui met fin à sa performance, l’artiste le répète trois fois avant de s’écrouler.

Quel peut être le message d’une femme qui se déplace en rampant ? Nous ne pouvons pas nous empêcher de penser à ORLAN qui, pour MesuRages, a rampé dans cette même ville, afin de confronter son corps à l’architecture. S’agit-il d'un hommage à ORLAN ou Julia Kurek reprend-elle sa performance pour signifier autre chose ?

L’expression corporelle, le visage en souffrance, l’essoufflement, ici tout nous indique que l’action est plus violente, « inhumaine » aux dires des passants qui ne comprennent pas pourquoi quelqu’un la filme. Le vidéaste amateur ne fait pas partie de l’action, il ne s’agit pas d’une vidéo artistique, mais de la vidéo d’une action artistique. Julia Kurek effectue sa performance et une personne la filme, « J’ai une caméra alors je filme ! », ce à quoi une passante lui répond : « Mettez la vidéo sur You Tube ! » Merci à internet, cette action sera visible par le monde entier, hélas peu de personnes comprendront vraiment ce qui est en train de se jouer sous leurs yeux. Alors que la plupart pensent à une blague ou à un pari, d’autres ont appelé une ambulance la croyant en danger. Mesdames et messieurs les passants, c’est vous qui êtes en danger si vous n’ouvrez pas les yeux.

Il s’agit bien d’une action artistique comme le déclare l’artiste aux ambulanciers et aux policiers voulant l’emmener. Ce déplacement au ralentit dans la rue, véritable expérience corporelle pour l’artiste, créé une rupture dans la perception que nous avons du lieu, mais aussi dans celle que nous avons du corps. Ce comportement physique en décalage est, selon l’artiste, une sorte de test d’empathie, mais est aussi révélateur des limites de la liberté individuelle dans l’espace public. Julia Kurek, entre « fardeau et légèreté », avance. Un fardeau, car elle rampe au sol avec tout le poids du passé sur le dos, mais aussi de la légèreté, car elle continue d’avancer malgré tout. Ce n’est que lorsqu’elle s’essouffle, dans les derniers mètres que les passants comprennent qu’elle représente la liberté, Julia Kurek peut enfin terminer son action artistique sous les applaudissements et les cris d’encouragement.

Julia Kurek, a 27 years-old Polish woman, entirely dressed in pink, is crawling on the main street of the old city of Gdansk, in front of a stunned audience: where is she going? Why is she not walking? There is no lack of comments about her mental state: not normal, sick, crazy, cameo! Finally a passer-by asks the right question: "Is it a happening?" Yes that's right, but what is its message? "Message" is also the word that ends her performance, repeated three times by the artist before collapsing.

 
What can be the message of a woman who moves by crawling? We can’t help thinking of ORLAN, who in MesuRages, crawled in the same city in order to compare her body to architecture. Is it an ORLAN tribute or did she make her performance for another meaning?

Her body language, her grimacing face, her short breath, everything here indicates that Julia’s action is more violent, "inhuman" according to the words of passers-by who didn’t understand why someone was filming. The video amateur is not part of the action, this is not a piece of video art, but a video record of an artistic action. Julia Kurek made a performance and someone filmed it, "I had a video camera so I filmed!" A woman replied: "Put the video on You Tube!" Thanks to the Internet, this action will be visible all over the world; unfortunately, only a few people really understood what had been staged in front of their eyes. While most were thinking of a joke or a bet, others called an ambulance believing in a danger. Ladies and gentlemen, you are in danger, if you don’t open your eyes!

In fact, it’s an artistic action as claimed by the artist to the ambulance and to the police who wanted to take her. Her slow movement in the street, a real body experience for the artist, has created a break in the perception we have of the place, but also in the perception we have of the body. This out of step physical behaviour is, according to the artist, a kind of “empathy test”, but also reveals the limits of individual freedom in public areas. Julia Kurek: between "burden and lightness” advances. A burden, as she crawled on the ground with all the weight of the past on her back, but also lightness, as she continued to move forward anyway. It is only when she runs out of breath, in the final meters, that passers-by understand that she represents freedom, Julia Kurek finally completed her artistic action with applause and shouts of encouragement.
